Subject/Oxbridge Masterclasses:

An introduction to university-level study in your subject

The premise of the subject masterclass is simple: to give an example of what it is like to study your chosen subject at university.

Admissions tutors look for two key pieces of evidence on top of academics: interest in the subject, and teachability.

Studying a subject at university level demands a much greater level of engagement with the fundamentals of what your chosen discipline seeks to tackle. Having a genuine interest is therefore essential for 1: portraying yourself as a suitable candidate for admissions tutors, and 2: sustaining the drive needed to achieve consistently high performance throughout your degree.

What we offer:

  • An hour-long session exploring university level content.
  • You will be assigned reading/worksheet/lecture material in advance of the lesson. This may be a book, an academic article, a university level problem sheet, and in humanities/social sciences, an essay title to guide you through your reading.
  • In the session, you will share your takeaways from the assigned material and discuss them with the tutor.
  • Depending on the tutors’ specialisms and availabilities, you may be able to choose specific topics within your subject which you would like to explore.

Oxbridge tutorials and supervisions

Oxford and Cambridge offers unique lessons named ‘tutorials’ and ‘supervisions’ respectively. These lessons typically involves one tutor and 2-3 (or even 1!) student, where discussions of problem sheets/essays assigned beforehand happens between the tutor and students.

The subject masterclasses are designed to mirror this system. The ‘Oxbridge’ masterclasses will be led by current Oxbridge students familiar with the system, with the assigned material coming from tutorials/supervisions which they themselves discussed with tutors.

Why choose this service?

  • Provides an insight into what it is like to study your chosen subject at course level. Allows you to decide ‘is this course right for me’ prior to applying and helps select the right course based on genuine interest.
  • Readings and problem sets done in the lessons are direct evidence of interest in the subject. Tutors can offer more niche suggestions of readings/subject areas which helps set you apart in your personal statement.
  • Oxbridge interviews are modelled based on tutorials/supervisions. Practice in discussing a topic in the style of a tutorial/supervision prepares you for interview discussions.
